June 2022

A major milestone, Don and I celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary this month. We were married in Jamestown Michigan Saturday, June 3, 1967. I was only 19 and now know that was the best decision of my life! What did I know at 19 to make such a major decision? I knew Don as a friend, met him in August and had our first date January 19 XX. He was my brother’s room mate and spent weekends on the farm so he wouldn’t be alone, yet not need to drive to Chicago to his family. Don sang in the church choir with my mom, he drank tea with my mom – won her heart I think before he had mine! We had our first date January 19 and parted for the summer. I went to Bolder Colorado on SWIM (Summer Workshop in Missions), and Don was in XX, Minnesota. HE asked if I would write him. Wanting to hear from him, though not wanting to seem too eager, I responded, “I’ll answer any letters you send me.” He wrote every day!! Some were just a card, though others a page or two. Not much more than reflections on his day, such as, practicing his sermons on the cows in the pasture, they would gather around and stay until he was finished!

June is also my birth month, June 18, 1947. I turned 75 and feel so blessed. Every birthday, I’d say, “I’m only one day older.” Never felt my birthday was that special, until I turned 18 while away from home working at Maranatha Bible Conference. I distinctly recall thinking; “WOW, I’m an adult, now legally responsible for what I do”. It was a fun summer —memories in clude:XXXX

This year I turned 75 and again, this birthday hit me more than “I’m just a day older”. This time it’s, “WOW! I’m 75, 3 quarters of a century, that’s a long life and I’m feeling great! I’m still working, and could work fulltime, however, there are only 24 hours/day and also want to have days I can do other activities I LOVE!, spend time with family, travel, continue leading GEMS, and crafting with friends. Crafting, also includes time consuming clean-up and organization that’s on my priority list for this summer. My goal is to have card making and cake decorating classes. when we bought our retirement home in Ferndale, I knew the downstairs was perfect for crafting and after 11 years, it needs a ….. miracle! Too much paper, stamps, ink and miscellaneous art supplies and so very UNORGANIZED. I’ve always struggled with organizing, a friend even given me a mug the said, “I need time to organize”. That appears to be the source of my mess. Once, I go at it, I’m actually able to make a decision, find a location and create a tidy place. I purchased several “getting organized” books, listened to webinars, I’ve created a vision, wrote down a plan, have the “keep”, “trash”, “not sure”, “good-will” boxes, to get my items organized; though at 75, I’m thinking I’ll need to live to 110 to complete the job. To my daughter; “remember, you do not need to take a bulldozer to clear the craft room. Coni and Jill have offered to give what’s still valuable a good home”.
